UAB expands options for students to manage mental health with new virtual group support programs

UAB students will receive online resources, wellness tracking, support articles and other mental health resources.

Angela Stowe 1 scrAngela Stowe, Ph.D.Students at the University of Alabama at Birmingham will have even more options to receive support and balance the rigors of academics, work and life with a new virtual group support program led by mental health professionals. 

UAB’s Student Counseling Services will utilize the program provided by Kaya. According to the American Institute of Stress, 80 percent of college students experience frequent stress, emphasizing the critical role mental health services play in the overall student experience, and 61 percent of college students seek counseling for anxiety, depression, academic performance, family issues and other relationship challenges.

The demands on students can be overwhelming, and we are dedicated to providing the resources and support they need to succeed,” said UAB Student Counseling Services Director Angela Stowe, Ph.D. This will allow us to expand our reach and offer even more comprehensive mental health services to our diverse student population through group support programs.”

The virtual group support programs, led by experienced mental health professionals, will help to create a nurturing environment for students to share experiences, support each other and build a sense of community. Students will receive online resources, wellness tracking, support articles and other mental health resources.
