Anyone age 16 or older who has not received the vaccine can register now at www.uabmedicinevaccine.org and find an appointment date, time and location at any of these three locations that is convenient and schedule an appointment. Many self-scheduled appointments can be made for the next day, and some self-scheduled same-day appointments also may be available at AOH Cathedral of the Cross, UAB Hospital-Highlands and the Hoover Met. Moving forward, the Parker High School location will be open for unscheduled vaccinations.

“As we can see from COVID-19 cases and events happening around the country — particularly in Michigan — we are still not without risk from this pandemic,” said Sarah Nafziger, M.D., vice president for Clinical Services for UAB Hospital. “Delivering as many vaccines as we can to all Alabamians as quickly, safely and efficiently as possible is a must. Vaccines are the ticket to our being able to return to normal and keep our families, friends and neighbors safe, and we are thrilled to be able to offer new and hopefully more convenient options to encourage more people to seek vaccinations.”

UAB is administering the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine at all of its sites. A recent analysis by Pfizer of 927 confirmed symptomatic cases of COVID-19 showed the vaccine to be highly effective with 91.3 percent efficacy observed against COVID-19, measured seven days through up to six months after the second dose.

The vaccine was 100 percent effective in preventing severe disease as defined by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and 95.3 percent effective in preventing severe disease as defined by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

The vaccine was also 100 percent effective in preventing COVID-19 cases in South Africa, where the B.1.351 lineage is prevalent. The company also said the safety of the vaccine had now been evaluated in more than 44,000 participants 16 years of age or older, with more than 12,000 vaccinated participants having at least six months’ follow-up after their second dose.
